Columbia Falls MT

tough day right out of the chute....if you saw the route profile, first 55 miles today were up and more up....lots of headwind....5 hrs to do just that....I knew the pace was slow and at my first time check at 30 miles it was confirmed....plus I was loaded heavy with water and food....plus wearing most of my warmest winter gear....my next stop was going to be 60 miles but at 54 was the McGregor Lake Resort and the restaurant was open....it was just past noon....a bowl of soup, dry shirt change and I was off....Sandy lost my GPS tracking a few miles outside of  Libby and I still had no signal....but they wifi so I sent her an email that all was well....rode the final 53 miles in 3 1/2 hrs and got to the motel ~4pm....the scenery was ok but yesterday in Idaho was way nicer....

This was coldest day...saw the sun three times for about a minute each time....plus the wind....and again very remote, meaning no places to stop for a long way, McGregor being the exception....but that doesn't mean there wasn't traffic....Hwy 2 is a main east west road....it's the only road up here....logging trucks....you can hear them coming as they have a distinct rumble....it's a given that they are a-holes....motor homes and campers....ranchers and farmers with their dual wheel diesel trucks....they didn't give an inch on a road with little or no shoulder and no one coming the other way....so a big middle finger salute to those morons....you earned an f-you....not as bad as Louisiana but a close second....tomorrow Glacier ! ! !

Day 3     108 miles     Total.    274

  1. Montana and logging trucks... they really could give a shit what's in front of them. Trust me, they don't drive any slower or more carefully with on tight, twisty dirt roads in the mountains either. It's best to give them every inch you can, even though it shouldn't work that way. I'm envious of you biking Going to the Sun Road. I did it about ten years ago, it's a beautiful ride. That park makes it hard to concentrate on the road.
